Privative causality

ANALYSIS 67 (3) July 2007

Abstract
Among the kinds of explanation given for the occurrence or non-occurrence of events and processes, the obtaining or non-obtaining of states and conditions, and the existence or non-existence of substances and characteristics, are ones that refer to absences, deficiencies and wants of provision. Here I argue that, in explaining how things are and how they are not, we need to allow for privative causal explanations, and in doing so be open also to the idea of privative causality.
